Haleakala, House of the Sun, is the Hawaiian name for the dormant volcano that rises 10,000 feet above sea level on the island of Maui. Clouds swirled over the road until they formed a solid blanket. Near the summit, the cloud layer broke and revealed an extraordinary place. It was breath-taking in the true sense of the phrase: the lower oxygen level at this altitude required a slower pace. The air was brilliantly crisp, the contrast between the blue sky, the clouds, and the deep blacks, reds and grays of the erosion patterns of the lava sands was striking. The colors and textures appeared to shift when a few clouds would form and drift by, softening the light for a few moments, changing the appearance of the landscape.
