Exploration for a grade school kid growing up in Skagway, Alaska was a full time job in the early 60's. My Dad was a teacher/coach during the school year and worked on the railroad, White Pass & Yukon Route, during the summer break. My best friend's father was the Railroad Shop Superintendent during those years. These two "connections" made it possible for John and I to wander at will unsupervised throughout the Roundhouse Shops and railroad grounds. Two of our favorite pastimes was to do "slow orbits" on the engine/rolling stock "turn table" and play engineer/fireman on the 8 to 10 retired steam engines located on sidings next to the roundhouse. I made a return visit to Skagway recently and found one of the vintage steam engines, #195, rusting away on a siding surrounded by trees and brush behind the Skagway Museum. Sad to see #195 in this condition---I'm hoping for a visit from a restoration crew soon that will save and restore this engine to its former glory.
