On Valentine's day in 2015, I was visiting a local Metro Park during a wicked snowstorm. Shortly after I arrived at the nature center, I was informed that the road out was closed, and I was marooned in the park until the road could be cleared.
So I wandered outside in the height of the storm, and noticed this Cooper's Hawk, apparently satisfied after a recent meal, taking shelter in a small tree near the building. I approached slowly, knowing that these hawks are fairly nervous, taking 'safety shots' from time to time. He allowed me to get very close - close enough to see individual snowflakes on his head and the blood from his recent meal on his beak.
The orange leaves on the tree, coupled with the color of his eye and feathers, made for a very warm image in contrast to the snow gathering on his head.
