Owls are known to have some of the best camouflage in the world, and the Eastern Screech-Owl doesn't fail to impress. On a brisk spring morning during "The Biggest Week in American Birding" festival in northwest Ohio, I was told about an owl in a dead snag at Maumee Bay State Park. I spent the better part of an hour looking for this owl with no luck. I returned later in the morning, again coming up short. Just as I was leaving, I glanced to my left and there it was! It's mate was using the nesting box about 20 yards away, while this owl hid quietly and rested in between hunts. It's interesting to note, that these owls usually mate for life, with a few exceptions. They also have two different morphs, meaning some Eastern Screech-Owls are gray, while others (though less in number) are red.
