My family and I were visiting the Cincinnati (Ohio) Museum Center at Union Terminal during the end of their dinosaur exhibit. As part of the exhibit, they had a life-sized dinosaur outside the museum facing away from the building.

When we left the museum, I noticed how the dinosaur was facing the downtown Cincinnati skyline, so I positioned myself to frame the scene without the...

When I’m not out photographing, I’m participating in my other passion: reenacting the fur trade period of the West in the early 1800s. While on a trip this fall with two friends in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of eastern Oregon, we had broke camp and were in the saddle heading to a lower elevation as a major early storm was moving in. As the snowflakes got bigger and bigger, I could see...

I shot this image casually, as a friend and I relaxed in a nearly empty waterfront café after a shoot. I can’t tell you why I shot it, but I can tell you why it gradually has become a sort of personal favorite. Although it contains nothing dramatic, it says something very basic about photography.

We don’t know whose sunglasses these are, how they came to be...

I made this image during a visit to Prague in 2007. On our first day there my wife and I took a walking tour that passed by this memorial to John Lennon. At the same time we arrived so did several large tour buses, which prevented us from getting a clear view of the memorial.

I like to explore and take pictures early in the morning on trips so that is what I did the following...

While on the freeway, I pass over this giant drainage system on the way to my studio each day. And each time, I catch a glimpse of this shopping cart way off in the back. I often wondered about the chances of it still being there in case I wanted to make a shot. Well, after about a week of seeing it every day, the shopping cart was still there. So, I waited until the sun was nice and low...

On a recent cruise of the French Polynesia in the South Pacific, I caught this chance image of a powerful thunderstorm enveloping the island of Moorea. The shaft of light evoked a feeling of hope, safety, and refuge in a turbulent world. Within a minute of taking this photo, the entire island was caught in a tropical downpour.

While sitting under a shade tree in the backyard, I took a quick shot of some oak leaves against the evening sky (shown upper right). When I processed the images I discovered the pleasing effect of the silhouetted leaves and spent the next few days scouring the yard for interesting shapes. I employed my Third Hand tool, which has a rod with an alligator clip on each end, to hang the subjects so I...

Moored at the abandoned Alameda naval base is the USS Hornet aircraft carrier. I decided to explore this floating museum while my wife attended a nearby antiques fair.

Climbing down the steep ladders, I became fascinated by the chambers and hallways, each compartment separated by a sculptural door. As I wandered the empty halls and rooms on my own, with the smell of oil in the...

A couple of years ago, I took my mother on a trip to Tokyo, Japan. I planned this trip as a way to give my family an opportunity to get out of their day-to-day routines and travel across the world to gain a new perspective on things. Our trip was full of fun and exciting excursions, and a few meaningful experiences. One of these experiences took place at the Kotokuin Temple in Kamakura, Japan.

Meandering through Miami’s Brickell financial district, I expected to be taking pictures of the architecture rather than nature. However, I was nicely surprised when this small anole appeared. I was struck not only by his eye-catching bright green skin, but also by the way his pink tongue matched the flower. This happy scene reminds me of nature’s resiliency as it seems to affirm...

Every time I glance at my two favorite images of this ostentatious peacock, taken at the Los Angeles Arboretum & Botanic Garden, I am reminded of the irreplaceable gift that has been given to us. What could have motivated Mother Nature to design such glorious colors and intricate patterns? We humans may never have the answer, but I am inclined to believe that it was simply to soothe the soul;...

We took this photo through our rental car windshield as the fog was lifting and the smoke from a forest fire lay heavy above the road early in the morning on Highway 120 as we entered Yosemite National Park. The combination of the filtered sunlight and sky resulted in a surrealistic road picture. We find it fun to capture the “mood” of the road. This image was made using our Sony...

On a visit to see my daughter’s family in southern Alabama, I took along my photo gear, as usual. My son-in-law knows I have a particular affinity for places and things that people just walk away from. He knows the scrap dealer who now owns the old Uniontown High School that was abandoned in the late 1990s when the new consolidated county high school was opened.

When...

On a morning walk/shoot through Loch Raven Reservoir in Loch Raven, Maryland, I came upon a gaggle of geese. The morning mist was lifting off of the lake and there were fishermen in the water. Fortunately, the geese didn’t need me to be around them, so I turned to head back to the road for some distance shots and waited for the sun to rise a little more. This is the scene that I was blessed...

I awoke at 4:30am with plans to climb a mountain to photograph the sunrise. We were at a bed and breakfast in the Catskill Mountains for a three-day photography course. The fog was dense that summer morning, so the majority of the photographers went back to bed. I borrowed a Nikkor VR 70-200mm f/2.8G and walked down to the edge of the river, where I quietly sat for the sunrise. One deer, then...
