Sony had a surprise camera announcement this morning: Sony Japan, that is. The Sony mothership in Tokyo unveiled the new Sony Alpha A7 II, a successor to the Sony Alpha A7, which was the first full-frame mirrorless camera on the market.

The very rare and very large Nikkor 6mm F/2.8 Fisheye Lens surfaces every once in a while and when it does, people’s heads turn. That’s exactly what happened when someone attached this whale-sized Fisheye to a Nikon D4S and shot some eye-catching footage (below) on a street corner in Copenhagen, Denmark recently.

Adobe has just announced that final releases of Lightroom 5.7 and Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.7 are now available. These updates offer several key features including a new tool to import files from Apple’s now defunct Aperture professional software, and from its current iPhoto consumer imaging software to Ligthroom.

Technically speaking, the Nikon D750 is the follow-up to the Nikon D700, which was released six years ago. That’s a lifetime between digital camera models, and to say that the D750 is not nearly as groundbreaking as its predecessor from way back in 2008 is not a put-down of this new full-framer from Nikon. It just shows how far imaging technology has come and how much the D700 was ahead of its time.

If you’re not so sure about DxO Mark’s much-discussed, negative review of the Canon 7D Mark II and you’ve got some free time on your hands (over 34 minutes, to be precise), you’ll want to check out the below video from photographer Tony Northrup. Titled “7D Mark II Image Quality: Is it as bad as DxO Mark Says,” the video breaks down DxO’s numbers and finds that Canon’s newest DSLR might be quite a bit better than that controversial review contends.

Drone photography is here to stay, whether the government likes it or not. That’s one of the messages from an intriguing roundtable discussion piece titled “Those Daring Photographers and Their Flying Machines” in an upcoming issue of Shutterbug magazine. In the story, written by Lorin Robinson, three experienced imaging drone pilots share their thoughts on this controversial topic, in what amounts to part “state of the drone industry” and part call to arms.

Yesterday we shared a video demonstrating how well the new Canon 7D Mark II’s autofocus tracks plummeting skydivers. Now here’s another clip that shows what the DSLR’s AF does for locking in on dancers.

“Location is everything,” the old real estate maxim goes, and I think I’ve landed in a pretty good spot. If you’re a longtime Shutterbug reader, you just might be saying to yourself now: “Who the heck is this guy and what’s he doing here?” The short answer, in case you missed last month’s Editor’s Notes, is that George Schaub stepped down as Shutterbug’s editor and I’ve taken over for him. I’ve known George for most of the time I’ve worked in the photography magazine industry, which is going on 16 years, and he’s always been someone I’ve admired.
