Sony Launches Zeiss 24-70mm F/2.8 and 16-35mm F/2.8 Lenses for A-Mount Cameras

Sony just announced two new Zeiss zoom lenses for its A-mount camera system: the Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL2470Z2) standard zoom and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL1635Z2) wide angle zoom lenses.

Sony says the new lenses “deliver significant improvements in image quality, ghost reduction and AF performance” over the previous models and feature a more rugged and dust- and moisture-resistant design.

The new lenses are designed to pair with Sony’s premium A99 and A77 II cameras.

The new Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II lenses feature  ZEISS T* coating on their optical surfaces designed to minimize ghosting and flare along with aspherical and ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements to tamp down aberration and minimize distortion.

The new lenses also feature enhanced AF capabilities compared to their predecessors, and deliver approximately 4x the subject tracking speed because of their SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) system and faster, more powerful processing in the lens LSI.

The new Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL2470Z2) standard zoom and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (model SAL1635Z2) wide angle zoom lenses go on sale in June for $2100 and $2250, respectively.
