This Raging Inferno Is Actually Burning Steel Wool Photographed with a Macro Lens (Video)

Light painting a night sky with burning steel wool is an effective (and dangerous) way to create some unusual images. The video below illustrates a different take on the technique—photographing a small amount of the combustible material through a macro lens.

As you can see in the clip from Macro Room, this safer approach creates the effect of a raging firestorm thanks to the tight perspective and resulting shallow depth of field.

As a cautionary tale, take a look at an earlier story we posted in which careless photographers using steel wool destroyed an 88-year-old historic monument in Florida when they inadvertently set the roof of the old wooden building ablaze and burned it to the ground.

So enjoy the video, and if you decide to give this technique a try please take the necessary precautions.
