Color In Black And White

Our Picture This! assignment for this month was "Color In Black And White," and readers responded with a wide variety of monochrome images, all made using color film or with color files from digital cameras. The key to this month's selections is that not every color image need be awash with red, green, and blue, but that light and atmosphere can conspire to create an effective image when there might be a hint of color in an otherwise gray scale scene.

Kayak In The Mist: Dr. Daniel M. Roper made this shot from an accompanying kayak on a small inland lake in Michigan. He used a Canon 10D in raw mode with a Canon 28-135mm IS lens. According to Dr. Roper, "The misty morning cast a surreal gray to everything near the lake, but the sky was blue, as you can see in the upper left portion of the picture."

Wrenches: David Kelly placed a set of wrenches on a black velvet background and used two umbrella-modified flashes with his Canon G2 lens at f/8 at 1/350 sec. Wrote Kelly, "I submitted this print in my local camera club competition in the color print division, but the contest chairman assumed I had made an error and placed it in the black and white division instead. It came in second in black and white."

Buttermilk Wilderness: Mark Bristol made this evocative shot west of Bishop, California, looking toward the East slope of the Sierras. He photographed with a Mamiya RZ67 with a 65mm lens. He shot on Fuji Velvia 50 with a Singh Ray warming filter and steadied his camera on a Manfrotto tripod for the 1/4 sec at f/32 exposure.

White Feather: Lori Diemer wrote, "It was hard to pass up the beautiful contrast between the smooth, dark, wet rocks and the stark white feather." She photographed along the Oregon Coast near Yaquina Head lighthouse with a Canon EOS Elan camera and 28-80mm lens on Fujichrome Velvia.
