Annette and Dennis were the names selected by a colleague at Jesuit High School of New Orleans, where I work as webmaster, photographer, and writer. The couple were chronicled in spring 2014 after settling in to a large nest located about 15 feet outside a fourth story office window in the six-floor administration building. Approximately 10 days after Annette and Dennis became parents, they left their nest momentarily. When they returned, both hawks made plenty of screeching noises. When I visited from the roof, I was stunned to see that the two nestlings were gone. The speculation is that the black crows saw a window of opportunity and swooped in for a meal. Annette and Dennis were spotted only occasionally in the past couple of years. They did not return to their nest in 2015 and in February 2016, two black crows moved in. C'est la vie.
