Can a Pro Photographer Tell the Difference Between a DSLR Photo & a Smartphone Shot? (VIDEO)

Do you think you could tell the difference between an image that was shot with a pro DSLR vs one that was captured with a smartphone? Do you think a pro photographer could tell the difference?

That's the question photographer Peter McKinnon tries to answer in the below video, where he compares images captured with a Canon 1D X Mark II DSLR vs photos shot with a Samsung Galaxy S10+ smartphone.

"Smartphone cameras keep getting better and better and more ridiculous and insane and impressive to the point where sometimes when I'm taking photos, these (smartphone) cameras are doing a better job sometimes than these (DSLR cameras) are," McKinnon notes. "I wanted to take them both out at the same time, shoot a couple of regular everyday style photos, stuff that we would be doing on a daily basis, (and compare them)."

On the one hand, the Samsung S10+ has three lenses built in – a 12mm, 25mm and 54mm – along with depth sensors to capture depth of field, and a lot of other advanced imaging technology, all of which fits in your pocket. On the other hand, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is one of the most sophisticated pro DSLRs on the market but weighs more than a hard-bound copy of War and Peace.

So how different is the image quality when capturing everyday images such as a basic portrait or a macro shot of a McDonald's hamburger? The fun part of the video is McKinnon lets you guess which image was shot with which device, and then reveals the results later so you can play along. Check it out and tell us how many you got right!
