5 Things You NEED to Know to Be a Better STREET Photographer (VIDEO)

Street photographer is fun, but street photography can be intimidating. Someone who has learned the hard way is Tim Northey, aka TKNORTH, who says street shooting has become his favorite genre of photography, but it wasn’t always that way.

“Street photography over the years has become my favorite style of photography to shoot but this wasn’t always the case,” Northey says. “Street photography for a lot of people can be very difficult to get started. Definitely true for me. But, over time with practice, this definitely changed.”

In the below video, he shares with you how to become a better street photographer more quickly.

“These are my five most valuable tips to not only get you more comfortable taking photos on the street but to get you taking better street photos,” he says.

Tip #1: Stress less about your settings

“If you can spend less time worrying about your settings, more time focusing on your composition, and be able to shoot quickly, chances are you'll get a much better result.”

Tip #2: Get comfortable shooting people and wandering through a city with a camera in hand

“Explore the city like a tourist in a new city, taking in all the sights as you start shooting, focus more on wider scenes rather than directly at people.”

Tip #3: Shoot using prime lenses

“Prime lenses are really the best way to really practice and work on your overall composition.”

Tip #4: Build experience shooting in all types of conditions

“Try a totally different time of day or wait for some different weather conditions, often more dramatic weather conditions make street photography easier.”

Tip #5: Set yourself an aim or theme for your street session

“This can be a great way to practice and really own on your skills and also build a particular street photography style that suits you and your photography.”
