Capturing good street photography images can be a lot tougher than it seems. First, you have to be bold enough to shoot candid images of people on the street, most times without their permission. Secondly, in this assignment we were looking for powerful street photography images that captured an emotion or told a story; not just random shots of people walking down the street. Or, to paraphrase the great Henri Cartier-Bresson, we were seeking images that captured “the decisive moment.” With these 10 favorites by Shutterbug readers from the Street Photography assignment, we found them.
Shutterbug reader Yvonne Baur captured this colorful image near “The Subway,” a uniquely shaped slot canyon in Zion National Park in Utah. “This spot is right before you enter the actual Subway section of the hike and the only water you see is through this tiny crack in the sandstone,” Baur says.

National Geographic anounced the winners of its 2015 photo contest today and they are spectacular. Thousands of talented photographers from around the world submitted their amazing images in the following three categories: People, Places and Nature. The Sony A7R II is a mirrorless, compact system camera with a full-frame sensor and extremely high resolution. The A7R II records images with 7952x5304 pixels and while the more than 42MP resolution is not as high as the sensor resolution of the Canon EOS 5DS, it provides images on the same level as digital backs for medium format cameras.
For those of you who have never worked in medium format, trust me, there is a difference you can see and feel. It’s no wonder that photographers such as Douglas Sonders choose a medium format camera system over a DSLR for the bulk of their work. And in Sonders’s case, his workhorse camera system is Phase One.
